Emily's 1905 Salad

Updated: Jun 4, 2020

This salad is served at a restaurant down in FL that my family always visited throughout my life. It is an amazing salad as it comes -- but I choose to alternate a couple of the ingredients to my liking -- BUT it's ALL about that dressing - and secret ingredient - worcestershire! My husband and I like hearty meals -- but this salad is now a dinner staple in our house.

Ingredients:

(this is based on 2 dinner portions or 4 small side salads)

Dressing:

- 1/8 cup champagne vinegar or golden balsamic vinegar

- ½ cup extra-virgin olive oil

- 2 teaspoons dried oregano

- 4-5 garlic cloves, minced

- Salt and pepper

Salad:

- 1 bag romaine -- or 2 stalks romaine cut thin

- Thick cut baked ham cut into thin strips

- 4 slices swiss cheese cut into thin strips

- 1 avocado (half per entree salad or quarter per side salad)

- On the vine or cherry tomatoes - about a handful - cut in half

- 1 tablespoon worcestershire per entree salad

- 1 tablespoon parmesan cheese per entree salad

- 1/2 squeezed lemon per entree salad

- Cracked black pepper

PRO TIP: chill the bowls and forks in the fridge for at least 20 minutes prior to serving.

Directions:

Dressing:

- Whisk or shake all ingredients until combined and emulsified

Salad:

- Divide the romaine lettuce into the bowls evenly. Add the tomatoes, ham, cheese and avocado in different sections of the bowl - like the above photo. Squeeze the lemon over the ingredients, then put the worcestershire on, then the dressing all over the salads. Finally, finish it off with the parmesan and cracked black pepper. SERVE right away. Do not dress the salad unless you are ready to eat.

- After you appreciate the salad looking pretty -- toss the bowl so all ingredients and dressing is mixed - enjoy!!

Serve with a side of some warm rolls if you're using as an entree salad!
